Broncos roster stock down no. 3: Jamar Johnson, safety

The safety position is rather loaded going into training camp this year.

The Broncos have one of the best duos in the game with veterans Justin Simmons and Kareem Jackson.

Jackson, back on another one-year deal, may or may not be in the team’s future plans, but the Broncos have a lot of young guys behind him to decide whether to keep around or let go at some point.

One of those young guys is Jamar Johnson, a player that many fans were excited about as of the 2021 NFL Draft because of his outstanding coverage abilities at Indiana.

Johnson didn’t crack the defensive rotation as a rookie, even after making some plays in the preseason that were impressive.

He also didn’t really carve out a full-time role on special teams, only playing in three games his rookie year.

A year two leap is going to be desperately needed for Johnson in order to crack the roster at safety, where the Broncos already have:

  • Justin Simmons
  • Kareem Jackson
  • Caden Sterns
  • PJ Locke
  • Delarrin Turner-Yell

Perhaps the greatest indicator yet of Johnson’s future with the team was the selection of Turner-Yell.

Fifth-round picks are guaranteed nothing so perhaps I’m overrating Turner-Yell a bit, but it feels more like the Broncos would be comfortable moving on from Johnson if they had to.
