Revisiting the Denver Broncos trade package for Russell Wilson
Seattle Seahawks haul in blockbuster trade with Denver Broncos
QB Drew Lock
TE Noah Fant
DL Shelby Harris
OT Charles Cross (9th pick in 2022 Draft)
EDGE Boye Mafe (40th pick in 2022 Draft)
DE Tyreke Smith (158th pick in 2022 Draft)
WR Dareke Young (233rd pick in 2022 Draft)
So far, the Seattle Seahawks have utilized the assets they’ve received in the Russell Wilson trade to add some core pieces to their roster.
In the end, Drew Lock is essentially a wild card for them. As of the time of this writing, Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll has noted that veteran Geno Smith is still ahead of Lock in terms of knowledge of the offense and it seems based on his comments that he would be the starter if they had a game this weekend.
The Seahawks picked up Noah Fant’s fifth-year contract option, and with a very palatable franchise tag number for tight ends, I think it’s almost a foregone conclusion that they have three years of team control with one of the better young tight ends in the game today.
Fant was probably the best long-term piece of the trade for Seattle in the non-draft pick category.
Shelby Harris is a player that will impact the Seahawks immediately but what about over the long term?
He’s under contract this year and next year and could be a cap casualty in 2023 with a cap hit over $12 million and $9 million in savings available.
As far as the draft choice investments so far, the Seahawks added players at some of the most valuable positions on their roster.
They haven’t used any of the Broncos’ picks to acquire a quarterback (yet) but they did take a future franchise left tackle in Charles Cross and a dynamic athlete off the edge in Boye Mafe.
As far as future building blocks go, the Seahawks took a safe path in the 2022 NFL Draft to look back on this trade in a positive way.
We’ll see what they do with those 2023 NFL Draft selections, which could be very late in the first and second rounds.
