Essang Bassey, Cornerback

The Broncos already parted ways with Essang Bassey once already and decided to bring him back.

Bassey struggled with injuries in 2021 and was eventually waived before being claimed by the Los Angeles Chargers. Things didn’t work out for him there and the Broncos brought him back for a second stint.

Bassey had a strong rookie season after going undrafted in 2020. Defensive backs are at a premium in today’s league and as long as he can prove that he is 100 percent healthy, the Broncos should keep him around in some capacity.

The defensive back position is deep for the team. In addition to Patrick Surtain and Ronald Darby, the Broncos have free-agent signing K’Waun Williams. The team also has former third-round pick Michael Ojemudia and this year’s fourth-round choice Damarri Mathis, making for an exciting group.

Undrafted free agent Ja’Quan McMillian is an interesting prospect as well.

Bassey would need to either be a back end of the roster guy who can play special teams or a practice squad stash, but he flashed enough talent in 2020 for the Broncos to continue developing him.
