The Denver Broncos should look to anchor their elite quarterback room with a quality backup in Cam Newton.

Right now, behind Russell Wilson, the team has Josh Johnson and Brett Rypien.  While it’s unlikely that Wilson misses any games, it’s still smart to want to add to the room.

Cam Newton was a below-average passer during his starting career, but presented an insane upside with his legs, helping him win an MVP in 2015.

Newton was never great but was serviceable, and his prior teams were able to win games with him and because of him.

At this point in his career, Newton is clearly a backup option but would be a great one at that.

Signing Newton would still give the Broncos a fighting chance against teams if Russell Wilson were to ever go down.

Newton is one of the best running quarterbacks in NFL history, and should still have a ton of quality years as a backup left in him.

It’s clear that there won’t be a team signing him to start unless there’s an injury, so I think Cam Newton would enjoy the possibility of playing with an elite roster behind Russell Wilson for a year.
