Ahead of his May 31 appearance in court, Arapahoe County Judge has signed a motion to dismiss all charges against Denver Broncos wide receiver Jerry Jeudy.
On the evening of May 12, Arapahoe County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the home of Denver Broncos star wideout Jerry Jeudy following a call from Jeudy’s girlfriend to assist her in getting some of her belongings back that the first-round draft pick had secured from her in his car including her purse, wallet, medical records, as well as a car seat and baby formula for the couple’s 1-month-old child.
After deputies arrived and assessed the scene, it was determined that Jeudy would be charged with second-degree criminal tampering with a domestic-violence enhancer, a misdemeanor charge in the state of Colorado.
Jeudy was arrested and taken to the Arapahoe County Jail where he spent the night awaiting a chance to appear before a judge. He was arraigned the following day where he did not enter a plea and was then released after posting a personal bond of $1500.
Jeudy was then ordered to return to court on May 31.
During the initial hearing, Jeudy’s girlfriend who was the other party involved in the incident requested that the judge dismiss the charges.
She told Judge Chantel Contiguglia that she never meant for Jeudy to get in trouble and that she had only wanted help from the police to get her belongings back.
Due to the nature of the charges that include a domestic-violence enhancer, the charges could not be dropped at the request of the deemed victim in the case, but by the prosecution.
Following the incident, celebrity lawyer Harvey Steinberg, who represented Jeudy in court was quoted speaking about the arrest of his client, and his belief that the charges should be dismissed.
"I don’t believe a crime has been committed. I don’t believe my client did anything that would rise to the level of a crime. I would think, given the factual scenario and given the situation as I’ve repeatedly said, which doesn’t involve any threat or act of actual violence, why wouldn’t you dismiss it?Bad things happen to good people, and that’s what this case is.Harvey Steinberg – Attorney For the Defense (via USA Today)"
Today, in advance of the second appearance by Jeudy in court it appears that the Arapahoe County District Attorney granted Steinberg’s wish.
Per Mike Klis of 9News, The Arapahoe County DA filed a motion to dismiss the Charges against Jeudy. The Presiding judge signed the motion to dismiss around 11 am, and the Charges against Jeudy have been officially dropped.
This does not mean that Jeudy is free and clear from possible punishment by the NFL. Under the NFL personal conduct policy, the 2020 first-round pick could still face a fine of some kind and even possibly, although unlikely, a suspension.
However, as far as the law is concerned, this is now a shut case and Jeudy is ready to go into the remaining offseason training with one less distraction on his mind.
3 Broncos who could lose their starting job to a rookie
The Denver Broncos selected nine rookies in the 2022 NFL Draft. Here are three of those newcomers who could claim a starting job this season.
Jeudy is predicted to have a breakout season with Denver Broncos new star QB Russell Wilson flinging passes to him. Not having the added distraction of criminal charges looming over him should help that possibility become a reality.
