Denver Broncos highest-paid player in 2022 no. 4: Randy Gregory, EDGE

2022 cash: $14 million

After the last couple of seasons, George Paton knew he needed to add to the Denver Broncos’ pass rush.

I think it’s safe to say he’s killed that area of need with fire.

It started last year when Paton picked up the fifth-year contract option on pass rusher Bradley Chubb. More on that in a bit.

It continued in the 2022 offseason when he went out in free agency and signed Randy Gregory, the fourth-highest paid Denver Broncos player in 2022 based on total cash payouts.

Gregory’s $14 million in cash comes from a $4 million base salary combined with a $10 million signing bonus, which will be spread out over the five-year life of the deal for bookkeeping purposes.

But Gregory received that money up front, and he also had another $14 million — his 2023 salary with the team — guaranteed for a total of $28 million in guarantees.

All told, that’s really not a bad deal for the Denver Broncos even though the optics of a five-year deal worth $70 million looks really risky for the Broncos without any other context or information.

Giving the oft-suspended and currently injured Randy Gregory $28 million guaranteed is still fairly risky from the outside looking in, but the Denver Broncos were obviously very comfortable with him as a person and believe he has turned a corner, which we saw plenty of evidence of the last couple of years in Dallas.
