Denver Broncos surprise potential cut at TE: Andrew Beck

The Denver Broncos dipped into the free agent tight end pool pretty early on in the offseason, signing blocking specialist Eric Tomlinson, formerly of the Baltimore Ravens.

In Nathaniel Hackett’s offense, Tomlinson would serve a similar role to what we’ve seen in recent years from Marcedes Lewis in Green Bay and Jacksonville.

There’s certainly a spot for a player that can block at this position, and primarily just do that.

You can’t help but wonder, though, what the Broncos’ plan at this position might be after the team:

  • Signed Eric Tomlinson
  • Re-signed Andrew Beck
  • Re-signed Eric Saubert
  • Drafted Greg Dulcich

How many tight ends are they planning on keeping around?

Financially, the ramifications of cutting someone like Tomlinson don’t make a lot of sense. The Broncos would have to eat a million bucks they just spent.

The dead cap charge for cutting one of Beck or Saubert is much easier to swallow, and because of the Saubert re-signing, I think Andrew Beck could be the odd man out at this position group.

As valuable as Beck has been on special teams and as a hybrid tight end/fullback, I think the Broncos have a solidified top four of primary tight ends right now and should they keep four on the roster, I think Beck is the one currently on the outside looking in.
