The Denver Broncos have a loaded roster which could lead to some surprising cut candidates. Which players need a big offseason to stick?

Having a 90-man roster as talented as the Denver Broncos have right now eventually leads to some pretty prominent names being let go in August and September.

Cutting the roster down to 53 players is not going to be easy, even just as the team is right now on paper. We don’t even know which players are going to break out or emerge yet in 2022.

As of right now, what players could wind up being surprise cuts at each different position group? Let’s take a look through the whole roster as it stands right now and try to predict some of the names that will either need to step up big this offseason to make the final roster or could be potential cut or trade candidates if guys break out behind them.

Denver Broncos cut candidate at QB: Brett Rypien

I think the Denver Broncos love Brett Rypien and would love to have him around in some capacity. I had Rypien on my initial post-NFL Draft roster prediction, but the more I think about it, the less I’m sure the Broncos will be able to afford a roster spot for him.

There’s simply too much talent elsewhere on this team.

Rypien has tremendous value in the QB room and may have a bright future as an NFL coach. He may not be a starting quarterback in the league but that’s okay. There are plenty of backup quarterbacks that have found other paths to success in the NFL.

Rypien has only been active for four games in two seasons. During the pandemic season, his presence on the roster was bordering on non-negotiable because of the way the testing rules were at that time.

Now in 2022, the Broncos can afford to try and sneak Rypien onto the practice squad and I think that’s the smart play.

They have already been able to do that multiple times in his young career.

Barring a massive breakout in the preseason from Rypien, I think we’re going to see him ultimately be cut from the 90-man roster and return to the practice squad if he clears waivers.
