Diontae Spencer, Wide receiver/Return specialist

I won’t get on my soapbox about keeping a return specialist when you only have 53 roster spots for too long here, so with that said, moving on from Diontae Spencer was the right move.

Spencer was a terribly average player for the Broncos for the three seasons he was with the team. If he offered anything in the way of an option in the passing game, it would be one thing. But he hardly ever saw any snaps at wide receiver. He caught 10 passes in three seasons.

On top of that, he wasn’t electric as a returner in any way.

In today’s game, most every kickoff seems to go out of the end zone or so deep into it that it’s not worth returning, so to have a return specialist, unless he’s a threat to score every time he touches the ball like Devin Hester, makes almost no sense.

The Broncos always saw something in Spencer as they claimed him off waivers from the Pittsburgh Steelers following final roster cuts in 2019. But with a new regime coming on, it was time to move away from him and hand his returning duties to a player who also contributes elsewhere.

It seems that no other teams are interested in Spencer’s return game either as he remains a free agent.
