Denver Broncos roster sleeper no. 5: Eric Saubert, TE

Is it really fair to call Eric Saubert a roster sleeper at this point?

Maybe.

Here’s why I’m including him.

First of all, the Broncos also re-signed Andrew Beck. I suppose Beck could just as easily be in this slot as well.

The fact that Beck doubles as a fullback is the reason I picked Saubert here, because the Broncos signed veteran blocker Eric Tomlinson and drafted Greg Dulcich in addition to re-signing Saubert.

Saubert caught his first NFL touchdown pass last year for the Broncos and it was a big one. Remember the team’s big win against the Chargers?

Saubert only saw 12 passes come his way in 2021. He caught eight of them, including that touchdown, but most of his significant contributions were made as a blocker and on special teams.

His special teams ability could be exactly what prompted the Denver Broncos to re-sign him to a one-year contract despite a complete turnover of the coaching staff.

Remember, new offensive coordinator Justin Outten was an assistant with the Atlanta Falcons back in 2017 when the Falcons selected Saubert out of Drake. Who knows how much input Outten had with that selection or Saubert’s development at the time?

All we know is, Outten was the Packers’ tight ends coach the last three seasons after he departed Atlanta to join Green Bay.

My guess is he knows Saubert quite well, and I am also guessing he had a hand in bringing him back into the fold. Don’t be shocked if he cracks the Broncos’ 53-man roster two years in a row.
