2. Drew Lock, 2019, Week 14

One of the more memorable post-Manning games was the Broncos vs. the Texans back in 2019, Drew Lock’s rookie season.

Lock started his first career game the week before, at home against the Chargers.

Denver won that game on a walk-off from Brandon McManus.

The Texans were 8-4 coming into the game, and Denver was 4-8.  Houston just came off a huge win against the New England Patriots during primetime, so they were riding a bit of a high.

Going into the game, I was thinking it could be a trap game for Houston, and boy was I right.

The game wasn’t close.  The defense came to play and the Drew Lock-led offense was lethal.

Denver scored 31 points in the first half, leading 31-3.  The game ended with a 38-24 final score, which didn’t show just how much of a blowout the game was.

Lock completed 22 of his 27 attempted passes, and threw for 309 yards, three touchdown passes, and one interception, which earned him a 136.0 rating.  He outdueled Deshaun Watson, who was greatly neutralized by the Broncos’ defense.

This was Lock’s second start, and the team was 2-0 with Lock under center after two games.

This game gave us home hope that Drew Lock was actually the guy.  Rich Scangarello was the offensive coordinator in 2019, so Lock was running a Shanahan offense.

I think the big mistake, though, was firing Scangarello after one season and replacing him with Pat Shurmur, who was the OC during the 2020 season, where we’ll find the best Broncos’ QB performance over the last five years.
