Denver Broncos top move no. 9: Signing CB K’Waun Williams

You can never have too many solid cornerbacks in today’s NFL.

The Denver Broncos made an interesting decision in the 2022 offseason to move on from Bryce Callahan as the primary nickel cornerback option, prioritizing former 49ers nickel corner K’Waun Williams instead.

Callahan, who has been oft-injured for the Broncos since signing back in 2019, was well-liked by his teammates in Denver and obviously very well-liked by the previous coaching staff.

He ended up signing with the Los Angeles Chargers where he has some familiarity with head coach Brandon Staley and defensive coordinator Renaldo Hill, who were both once assistants with the Denver Broncos under Vic Fangio.

Williams comes from the San Francisco 49ers where he played for Robert Saleh and DeMeco Ryans for most of his career, and the new defensive staff in Denver — coming from the Los Angeles Rams — obviously got a very good look at Williams throughout his time with the 49ers.

Williams is a former undrafted free agent out of Pittsburgh who gives the Broncos a smart, experienced player in the slot.

He’s not the biggest corner but he’s physical and aggressive, especially when it comes to blitzing and playing the run.

I think he’s going to be a nice piece for the Denver Broncos’ defense as long as he can stay healthy in 2022.
