K Jason Elam –  3rd Round,1993

We in Denver are spoiled when it comes to kickers. Not only do we play in the specialist-friendly Mile High, but we have also had generations of good kicking play. For many of us, that all started with Jason Elam.

For a decade and a half, #1 put up perhaps the most reliable, clutch kicking in the league. Mile High Magic from 1993-2007 owes as much to Jason Elam as it does John Elway or Mike Shanahan.

After a decorated career at Hawaii, the Broncos spent a 3rd round pick (their highest ever at the position) to bring Elam into the room. He quickly earned a spot on the All-Rookie Team, and earned his first Pro Bowl/All-Pro selection two years later.

Elam was the centerpiece of Denver’s special teams unit for 15 years from ’93-’07 and finished his time here as our all-time leader in points (1786).

The greatest thing about his game wasn’t just the accuracy or power of his leg, but the ability to come up big in big moments. Who could ever forget his Super Bowl performances, his game-winning kicks, or his record 63-yarder?

A 3rd round pick is a high investment for the position, and Elam proved Denver right. He is now enshrined in the Ring of Fame.

Honorable Mentions

DB Billy Thompson – 1969

This one was tough. Could honestly be a toss-up between the two, as Thompson played 13 fantastic seasons in Denver and locked down the back end of the Orange Crush defense.

S Justin Simmons – 2016

G Dan Neil – 1997

DT Keith Traylor – 1991
