Most likely Denver Broncos rookie to play in a starting role: Damarri Mathis, CB

My favorite pick of this year’s draft class, Damarri Mathis adds strength to the Broncos cornerback room and I would not be surprised to see him playing in a starting role this season.

After a monster performance at the scouting combine, Mathis started to rise on many analysts’ draft boards and was coveted by the Broncos front office. Dane Brugler of The Athletic had Mathis rated as a top 100 player, and the Broncos were able to land Mathis with the 115th pick.

The Broncos needed to add depth to the cornerback room. After the projected three starters in Surtain II, Darby, and Williams the depth of this position does fall off a bit. A common phrase that is all but spent is “you can’t have too many corners”.

Mathis has the ability to play both in the slot and on the outside, and he will undoubtedly see some playing time on special teams.

Broncos fans have seen injuries happen in the cornerback room before, and if (hopefully not) there are some health concerns this season at this position, Mathis could be the name called out of this draft class to play in a starting role.
