The Denver Broncos are reportedly bringing back running back Melvin Gordon who helps solidify their backfield for the 2022 season.

The Denver Broncos are bringing back a key piece of their offense with running back Melvin Gordon returning to the team on a one-year deal worth up to $5 million.

The initial agreement on a contract was first reported by Jordan Schultz.

Melvin Gordon is back on a one-year deal with the Denver Broncos

Back in the 2020 offseason, the Denver Broncos made the decision to go after Melvin Gordon in free agency in a deal that wasn’t overly popular with fans who are against those kinds of moves on principle.

There are a lot of football fans, in general, that don’t like the idea of signing free agent running backs or drafting them high.

The Broncos have done both in recent years.

Melvin Gordon and Javonte Williams split carries for the Broncos last year and split touches almost exactly over the course of the season. They each had 203 carries but Williams had 15 more touches than Gordon due to the fact that he played in one additional game.

The Broncos have done a number of pre-draft meetings with running backs that could still be value players in this year’s draft, even if the team decides not to prioritize the position with one of their top picks.

In 31 games for the Broncos, Melvin Gordon has been pretty much exactly as he was advertised coming to the Mile High City from the rival Los Angeles Chargers.

He has 20 touchdowns in 31 games along with 2,275 yards from scrimmage. He may not be getting Pro Bowl recognition but he has been one of the Broncos’ only consistent sources of offense, even if that has come with a few untimely fumbles.

Russell Wilson is pleased with the move.

Back in 2011, Wilson and Gordon were teammates for one year with the Wisconsin Badgers. Gordon was hardly sniffing the field behind the likes of Montee Ball and James White at the time, but they were there together nonetheless.

Although fantasy football players are not happy about it, Gordon being back in Denver really fortifies the backfield.

It’s worth mentioning that, with a back-to-back MVP quarterback in Green Bay, Nathaniel Hackett and Matt LaFleur schemed 444 touches between Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon. There is no way that Javonte Williams could handle that kind of workload, and he has worked well with Gordon already.

This is a great pre-draft move for the Broncos that could certainly alter plans for Friday and Saturday, where the Broncos have nine selections.
