Who could the Denver Broncos sign as a backup running back in 2022?
Denver Broncos RB2 options for 2022
2. Phillip Lindsay
How about a reunion with a former two-time 1,000-yard rusher? Phillip Lindsay played well during his first two years in Denver after being undrafted. Injuries and a perhaps murky situation with Melvin Gordon spelled the end of his tenure in Denver.
Since then, Lindsay has not been nearly as effective, failing to latch on with a team in the process.
Now a free agent, Lindsay, 27, may think a return to Denver makes sense, and it does.
Lindsay played well in Denver’s Shanahan style, outside zone scheme in 2019 when the offense was coordinated by Rich Scangarello, a Shanahan disciple.
Now, Denver will return back to running this offense, which often relies on its running backs being able to make quick cuts, hit the open holes, and turn up the field.
Phillip Lindsay and his 4.38 speed are perfect for that.
His departure from Denver might have been a giant turn-off for some fans in Broncos Country, but I do think he might be open to a return. There’s a new front office and coaching staff in town, along with new faces on offense.
Lindsay might think it’s a perfect situation for him to come back in, and might not have any negative thoughts about the team, if he did before.
I’ve written a piece on my thoughts that Lindsay should return. I do genuinely think it’s a good idea; I think he’d thrive as an RB2 in this offense and would help keep Javonte Williams fresh.
