How have Broncos fared the last 3 times they didn’t have a first-round pick?
Broncos get one of the best late-round gems ever in 1995
The 1995 draft was a highly forgettable class for the Broncos except for one player that clearly stands out.
In that draft, the Broncos did not have a selection until the fourth round. That was due to two trades they had made the previous season to acquire veterans from other teams.
The Broncos traded their first and third-round selections to the Atlanta Falcons in exchange for wide receiver Mike Pritchard. They had also shipped their second-round pick (along with a first and sixth-round pick in 1994) to get Gary Zimmerman from the Minnesota Vikings.
Armed with seven total selections in 1995, these were six of the players the Broncos selected:
Jamie Brown, Tackle, Florida A&M
Ken Brown, LB, Virginia Tech
Phil Yeboah-Kodie, LB, Penn State
Fritz Fequiere, Guard, Iowa
Steve Russ, LB, Air Force
Byron Chamberlain, TE, Missouri
In the sixth round of that draft, the Broncos chose Terrell Davis, a running back out of Georgia. He was the No. 196 overall pick of that draft and there were 16 running backs drafted ahead of him and that’s if you don’t include the four fullbacks that were taken in front of him.
You have heard of the Tom Brady six. What about the Terrell Davis 16?
Davis would go on to be one of the best Broncos players in team history during a career that ended in the Hall of Fame.
Other years in which the Broncos had no first-round pick: 1994, 1990, 1986, 1984, 1980
