5 mistakes the Denver Broncos must avoid in the 2022 NFL Draft
Denver Broncos mistake to avoid no. 2: Going away from what worked
In the 2022 NFL Draft, the Denver Broncos utilized their top four selections — all of them within the first three rounds — to strengthen positions of strength.
Patrick Surtain II was added to an already loaded cornerback room. Even though things didn’t work out with Kyle Fuller, the perception when Surtain was drafted was that the cornerback group in Denver was already very good.
Javonte Williams was added with Melvin Gordon and Mike Boone already under contract.
Quinn Meinerz was perhaps the most curious of the top 100 picks given the Broncos’ recent investments in Dalton Risner, Lloyd Cushenberry III, and Graham Glasgow.
Baron Browning was selected despite incumbent starters Alexander Johnson and Josey Jewell back in 2021.
All of the players drafted with the top four picks by the Broncos were added to strengthen position groups that, at least from outside perspective, were already pretty strong.
Now, not only did those players wind up playing big roles in 2021 as rookies but they are all (except Browning, at this point) expected to be starters in 2022.
George Paton and the Denver Broncos front office can’t go away from the strategy of strengthening positions of strength in the 2022 NFL Draft, especially if you have players at those position groups on the final year of their contracts.
Some positions like that this year include EDGE, defensive line, cornerback, safety, interior offensive line, and linebacker.
