Denver Broncos surprise position no. 1: Wide Receiver

A year ago at this time, I think a lot of people were surprised that the Denver Broncos selected Patrick Surtain II with their top pick in the 2022 NFL Draft or that they even took a cornerback early, in general.

Remember, the team had signed Ronald Darby in free agency along with Kyle Fuller. Bryce Callahan was back. Michael Ojemudia would presumably be a great CB4 given the fact he started most of his rookie season in 2020.

Leading up to the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft, most people had written off the possibility of Surtain or Jaycee Horn and had moved on to other position groups.

I could see the wide receiver position being similar this year.

The Broncos extended both Courtland Sutton and Tim Patrick. They’ve got Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler with two years each remaining on their rookie contracts.

The 64th overall pick will be the highest pick the Broncos have until 2024, barring any trades. This selection should be used on the best available player and many would prefer that to be at a premier position.

In today’s NFL, wide receiver is a premier position.

If the Broncos take a receiver at 64, it could allow them to swing a trade involving one of their other receivers in 2023 to recoup some NFL Draft capital, potentially.

I’m not saying that’s the only course of action, but as surprising as a wide receiver at pick 64 would be, perhaps it shouldn’t be written off entirely if the right guy falls to that pick.
