The Denver Broncos will make their first pick in the 2022 NFL Draft in less than two weeks.

But that pick won’t come until the late stages of the second round. The team traded its first-round pick and its first selection in round two to the Seattle Seahawks as part of the package used to acquire Russell Wilson.

It’s always good to have a first-round pick and the Denver Broncos initially had one of those in the top 10 of this draft. But the chance to get Wilson was far too scintillating for general manager George Paton who now must devise a plan to get the best possible player on the board at No. 64.

There should still be a wealth of talent available when that pick comes around, including these inside linebackers who could each greatly help the defense.

Great players and all-time greats can still be found in the second round. For example, Drew Brees, Rob Gronkowski and Davante Adams were all chosen in the second round.

The Broncos have found some great players in the second round across their history. Here is a look at the five best second-round picks ever made by the team from a list that had several great players to choose from. Narrowing it down to just five was fairly difficult.

The Broncos also have some players on the current roster who could eventually be on this list, such as Courtland Sutton and Javonte Williams.

Broncos second-round honorable mentions

Barney Chavous: Chosen in the second round of the 1973 draft out of South Carolina State, Chavous spent his entire 13-year career in Denver as part of the a”Orange Crush” defense. Sacks were not tracked for the entirety of Chavous’ career but he is unofficially credited with 75 for his career.

Ian Gold: The Broncos selected Gold in the second round of the 2000 draft out of Michigan and for a total of seven seasons with the Broncos in two separate stints, he was a solid linebacker for the team. He had 491 tackles and 17 sacks for his career.

Darrent Williams: There seems to be little doubt that Williams was well on his way to stardom before his life was tragically cut short after just two seasons with the Broncos. He was the team’s second-round pick out of Oklahoma State in 2005.

Eddie Royal: Chosen in the second round in 2008, Royal quickly put his stamp on the league as one of the best young wide receivers in it. He put together an incredible rookie season, catching 91 passes that year. To this day, only three rookie wide receivers have ever had more.
