The Denver Broncos have more picks than expected in the 2022 NFL Draft after the team received clarification regarding trade compensation.
George Paton has been adamant all offseason about the Denver Broncos having nine selections in the 2022 NFL Draft, but for the majority of the last few months, nobody has agreed with him.
At least, mock draft simulators have inaccurately reflected what selections the Broncos have owned all offseason and even the team’s official account posted an inaccurate count of the team’s picks recently.
Even though the team and perhaps the league have made official these as the Denver Broncos’ selections, Paton has said on multiple occasions that the team has nine picks, and if he had only said it the one time, you might have just written it off as Paton slipping.
After all, a number of picks changed hands in the Russell Wilson trade, so it would be understandable if Paton thought he had nine picks but only had eight.
That isn’t the case, however, and Paton took up the issue with the NFL, it seems.
Apparently, there was an issue with the language of the Trinity Benson trade, in which the Denver Broncos sent the young wide receiver to Detroit along with a sixth-round pick in exchange for 5th- and 7th-round picks.
There was a discrepancy with the 7th-round pick coming from Detroit being conditional, and apparently, everyone thought the conditions were not met and Detroit would keep its 7th-round pick.
George Paton said absolutely not. He said that Adam Banks should not be with the Hawks and that he belongs on District 5.
Hopefully that reference will land for at least one of you.
As you can see, the Denver Broncos’ updated list of draft selections isn’t exactly that much more impressive, but Paton has always talked about having more “darts” to throw at the Draft board and he absolutely has nine instead of eight darts.
He mentioned a couple of weeks ago that his goal is to get to 10 selections, so we’re not done seeing Paton wheeling and dealing. Hopefully, there is another behind-the-scenes video of him doing exactly that this year.
The 234th overall pick in this year’s draft may seem inconsequential, but keep in mind that the Broncos were able to snag Jonathon Cooper last year at pick 239 overall.
Where does Russell Wilson rank among the top 32 NFL quarterbacks?
Where does new Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson rank among the top quarterbacks in the NFL heading into the 2022 season?
You never know who is still going to be on the board at that point, so every single one of these picks matters.
