Former Denver Broncos DC Wade Phillips joins the XFL
Former Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Wade Phillips is joining the XFL as a head coach.
A fan favorite of Broncos Country, Wade Phillips has found a new home, and no it is not back in mile high. The 74-year-old Texas native announced this morning via Twitter that he will be joining the XFL as one of the head coaches…
Phillips joins the XFL as a head coach with 37 years of experience in the NFL, including two years as the Denver Broncos head coach and six years as the defensive coordinator. Phillips was responsible for the 2015 Broncos defense that many argue was one of the best defenses in NFL history after winning the Super Bowl later that season.
After Phillips left the Broncos In 2016 he joined the Los Angeles Rams for the next three seasons creating another dominant defense that would go onto the Super Bowl and contain the New England Patriots to just 13 total points.
Phillips had the role of head coach 12 out of the 37 seasons where he had an 82-64 record for a win percentage of .562. The biggest knock on Phillips came in the playoffs, where as a head coach, he holds a 1-5 record. The last time Phillips served as a head coach was in the 2013 season with the Houston Texans for three games before making the transition back to full-time defensive coordinator.
Phillips joins Bob Stoops, Terrell Buckley, Hines Ward, Rod Woodson, Reggie Barlow, Anthony Becht, and Jim Haslett as XFL coaches all announced Wednesday. The XFL is set to return in 2023 under new owners Dwayne Johnson and Dany Garcia, who becomes the first female owner in major league sports.
The XFL was bought In 2020 for 15 million dollars after a second failed attempt. However, before selling to Johnson and Garcia, records showed that the XFL brought in 1.9 million television views per game and generated 20 million dollars in the short-lived season.
