Denver Broncos bringing in tackles for pre-draft visits
The Denver Broncos are hosting right tackle prospects Abraham Lucas and Tyler Smith for pre-draft visits.
If there is one pressing need on the roster of the Denver Broncos, it’s the right tackle position. The team is making sure all of their options in the 2022 NFL Draft are exhausted.
The team has hosted or will be hosting Washington State tackle Abraham Lucas and Tulsa tackle Tyler Smith for pre-draft visits.
Lucas is listed at 6-foot-6, 322 pounds with an 81 3/8” wingspan.
Pro Football Focus highlights Lucas’ tremendous balance for his size, and how he is a very athletic tackle. This will come in extremely handy in the NFL, with defensive linemen and linebackers also possessing balance and athleticism.
Defensive linemen and linebackers have their own different types of moves to try and get around tackles, but with Lucas’ awareness and athleticism, it should not often be an issue. I personally love the way Lucas transitions from a double-team block to moving to another oncoming defender.
Tyler Smith is even a little bit bigger than Lucas. Although he is also 6-foot-6, he has 10 more pounds on Lucas, listed at 332. Smith will be entering the 2022 NFL Draft as a redshirt sophomore. PFN highlighted Smith’s motor in their scouting report of him.
Of course, both prospects will have some things to clean up, but at the end of the day, not a single prospect will be perfect and there literally will not be a player that can do no wrong.
The issues with these prospects are something that can be fixed with coaching. The Denver Broncos are bringing in a new blocking scheme than what they’ve recently run, so we’ll get a taste of what this offensive line will be like for years to come.
When the Broncos are on the clock with the 64th overall pick, it would not shock me if they selected a right tackle. Bobby Massie was a pretty solid right tackle for the Broncos in 2021, but I’m not sure they’re interested in re-signing him at this point.
