Denver Broncos visit with East Carolina cornerback Ja’Quan McMillian
The Denver Broncos may add a cornerback in the 2022 NFL Draft and are meeting with Ja’Quan McMillian, formerly of East Carolina.
The cornerback room of the Denver Broncos is going to look a little bit different in 2022. We don’t know if Bryce Callahan or Kyle Fuller will return, and if they don’t, we can expect the team to address the position in the 2022 NFL Draft.
The team is doing its homework on prospects, including meeting with former East Carolina cornerback Ja’Quan McMillian.
McMillian played three seasons at East Carolina. During that time, he suited up in 33 career games. He recorded 127 total tackles including five tackles for loss.
What impresses me most about McMillian is his ability to take the football away from opposing offenses. He recorded 12 interceptions during his three-year collegiate career, one for a touchdown. McMillian also forced two fumbles and recovered two.
McMillian was not invited to the 2022 NFL Combine, for whatever reason, and though he says that hurt, his mindset is on point. He said that part of the process added fuel to the fire:
"“Oh yeah, definitely. I was definitely shocked but you know, it happens for a reason. I have to keep going, keep pushing.”— Former East Carolina cornerback Ja’Quan McMillian at ECU Pro Day."
Despite McMillian’s projection of being a late-round to undrafted pickup, the cornerback saw a grand total of 28 teams show up to the school’s Pro Day, which took place on March 29th. That is a tremendous amount of teams, obviously. There will likely be plenty of those teams fighting for his services when Day 3 of the 2022 NFL Draft comes around.
It would not be surprising to me if the Denver Broncos spent an earlier draft pick at the cornerback position due to the loss of Callahan and Fuller. McMillian said that most teams considered him to be a nickel corner, which is the position he would fill, left by the absence of Callahan—which, to some, is a player the team should stay away from in free agency.
As McMillian’s scouting report on The Draft Network states, his size of 5-foot-10, 183 pounds is not ideal, but we have seen some undersized players make tremendous impacts on the game (see: former Indianapolis Colts safety Bob Sanders).
