Denver Broncos FA still available no. 5: Bryce Callahan, CB

Undoubtedly the most surprising Denver Broncos player to still be available right now is slot cornerback Bryce Callahan.

Although he’s not been able to stay consistently healthy over the last couple of seasons, Callahan has proven to be highly effective when he is healthy and not just as a nickel corner but also playing on the outside as much as he did in 2020.

With his inside-outside versatility, how has Callahan not signed on to a cornerback needy team? Although it didn’t work out with Vic Fangio as the Denver Broncos’ head coach, he was right about one thing — there are 96 cornerback spots in the NFL and there aren’t enough corners to fill them.

Callahan is certainly one of the top 96 players at his position in the NFL, and likely in the top half of those players if not better.

The Broncos decided to go after K’Waun Williams to fill their void in the slot, although many fans have still been hoping for Callahan to return again on a one-year deal to fortify the depth at corner.

The Vikings, who have Ed Donatell as their defensive coordinator, also went a different direction at nickel, signing former Packers nickel corner Chandon Sullivan.

The Chargers with Brandon Staley? They went after JC Jackson and will likely utilize Asante Samuel in a nickel role. However, they could move on from Michael Davis, keep Samuel outside, and put Callahan in the slot to upgrade that unit overall.

It’s surprising to see Callahan still on the open market, but he will undoubtedly have a home somewhere in 2022 and a big role to play wherever he lands.
