The Denver Broncos have a few players that could be offered contract extensions from the team. Who are these players heading into 2022?

The Denver Broncos are set to have a much-needed successful season in 2022.  All eyes are going to be on Russell Wilson, as he makes his debut several months from now, but other bits of attention should be given to a few other players who have a chance to be offered contract extensions from the team during the season.

The Broncos are not strangers to giving extensions during the season.  John Elway did it several times, and George Paton did it most recently with Courtland Sutton and Tim Patrick.

One reason why this is a smart decision is that players often get more expensive when they hit the open market.

Re-signing Bradley Chubb after week 13 of the 2022 season, for example, is surely going to be much cheaper than re-signing him after the season when free agency begins.

Since George Paton has shown a willingness to give cornerstone players contract extensions during the season, there’s no reason to believe he won’t be able to do it again during the 2022 season.

I’ve identified three players who I think could be offered contract extensions during the 2022 NFL season.

1. Bradley Chubb, EDGE

Bradley Chubb’s best season came in 2018 when he nearly broke the rookie sack record playing alongside Von Miller.

Since that season, he’s battled injuries and inconsistent play.  He did have his fifth-year option exercised, and he’s set to play on that this season. However, he becomes an unrestricted free agent after the 2022 season.

There is no denying his talent; he was picked 5th overall back in 2018 for a reason, but I’m beginning to sense that he could easily be labeled as a bust if he does not bounce back in 2022.

However, with reinforcements added to the defense by way of D.J. Jones and Randy Gregory, Bradley Chubb should be set up for success in 2022.

Sacks aren’t everything.  Generating pressure and getting the quarterback to move within the pocket is huge, along with being a force in the run game.

So, while Chubb may not notch 15 sacks this upcoming season, he can still be supremely effective as a pass rusher.

Given his injury history and inconsistent play, Chubb may come at a discount regardless, but if he does get off to a hot start in 2022, don’t be surprised to see George Paton lock him up for the future.

Let’s also not forget that Chubb plays an extremely valuable position as well.
