Denver Broncos free agents to stay away from

3. Calais Campbell, DL

Calais Campbell was apparently interested in Denver during the 2017 offseason.  He chose the Jacksonville Jaguars instead.

Now, Campbell is a free agent, and Denver could use a boost along the defensive line after losing Shelby Harris and the inconsistencies of Mike Purcell.

Three years ago, Calais Campbell probably would have been a strong signing, but now, not so much.

He turns 36 on September 1st, so he’s old by NFL standards, and his play is beginning to reflect that.  In 2021, he managed just the second-lowest sack total of his career, the fourth-lowest tackle output of his career, and the fifth-lowest QB hits total of his career.

His production across the major categories is down big time.

Part of that could be due to him playing only 64% of snaps, which is the second-fewest of his career, but why exactly did we see a snap dropoff from earlier in his career?

I’m not sure Campbell is going to be worth the money he might command on a one-year deal.

He also apparently contemplated retirement after the 2021 season, so questions about his commitment are valid.

He was born in Denver, so the connections are obvious, but I do not think his services are worth it at this point.
