The Denver Broncos have met with SMU tight end Grant Calcaterra as part of their pre-draft visits.

The Denver Broncos are in need of tight end depth following the trade that brought Russell Wilson to them and that shipped off former first-rounder Noah Fant to the Seattle Seahawks this offseason.

They are doing their due diligence on tight end prospects, including former SMU and Oklahoma tight end Grant Calcaterra. In fact, there’s a specific word in the following tweet that you should probably take note of…

Did you guess it? Calcaterra has consistently heard from at least five teams, including the Denver Broncos.

Watching Calcaterra, he appears to be phenomenal at elevating himself to reel in some somewhat difficult passes. He can “climb the ladder” if you will. Some may consider him short (he came in just under 6-foot-4 at the 2022 NFL Combine), but Calcaterra can make plays when lined up at tight end or even in the slot.

The big knock on Calcaterra is his injury history. Unfortunately, concussions forced him to make a tough decision to retire in 2020. In 2017, Calcaterra played in just five games. In 2018, he added 12 games to his collegiate career. 2019 was a rough year for him, though, as he played in just three games, and that’s when he decided to put his football career on hold.

It’s devastating to see someone’s dream hit a roadblock due to something so out of their control.

However, it is very inspiring that Calcaterra decided to return to football the following season and record 38 receptions for 465 yards and four touchdowns. That happened to be the best football season of his collegiate career.

Currently, the Denver Broncos have Albert Okwuegbunam as their projected starter at tight end, with Shaun Beyer and newly-signed Eric Tomlinson also on the roster. The team let Eric Saubert hit free agency and it does not appear as of right now that they are interested in bringing him back. They surely will want to add another tight end through the draft process in just a couple of weeks and start to explore their options.
