Denver Broncos FA possibility no. 2: Eric Ebron, TE

Initially, I felt like the Denver Broncos were going to be a bit more aggressive on the free agent tight end market.

I will admit I was obviously wrong about that one.

The Broncos have passed on the first, second, and even third waves of tight end signings at this point. Even some of the most sensible fits like Robert Tonyan or Tyler Conklin have signed elsewhere.

The Broncos passed up on two former Russell Wilson teammates at the tight end position as well in Will Dissly and Gerald Everett.

I should clarify — the Broncos did sign a tight end in free agency. They brought in Eric Tomlinson, a blocking specialist who will be more of an extension of the offensive line than anything else. They also re-signed Andrew Beck who was out in California at workouts with Russell Wilson and some of his other teammates recently.

Yes, the Broncos have Albert Okwuegbunam. Clearly, at this point, my assumption that Okwuegbunam would not enter training camp as the presumptive TE1 is off-base. Again, I’m taking an “L” on that one.

I still don’t think the Broncos should be replacing Noah Fant with just a rookie at the TE position, especially considering Albert O. is only a year removed from a major knee injury and recovery.

One signing at this point that would upgrade the depth at the position and not immediately push Okwuegbunam down the depth chart would be Eric Ebron, the former first-round pick of the Detroit Lions.

Ebron has been cleaning up his issues with dropped passes in recent years and even though he only played half a season last year, Ebron still has the opportunity to be a big-play type of threat at the position for a team like the Broncos.

I like his speed and athleticism being added to this group with Tomlinson as the primary blocker in the group.
