Denver Broncos sign defensive back from a football family
The Denver Broncos have added some depth to the defensive backs room.
The team announced on Monday that it had come to terms with safety J.R. Reed. Undrafted out of Georgia in 2020, Reed has bounced around the league in the last two years.
He was signed by the Jacksonville Jaguars following the 2020 draft but did not make the team and was scooped up by the Los Angeles Rams. The New York Jets signed him off the Rams’ practice squad and he most recently played for the New York Giants.

To this point, Reed has just been a role player in his short career but new Denver defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero is familiar with Reed from their time together in Los Angeles. There is definitely room for a player to climb the ranks in Denver’s secondary but Reed could also make his mark on special teams.
Reed has played in 16 career games and has 15 total tackles. But perhaps the most interesting tidbit about Reed is the fact that he comes from an NFL family. He has some pretty good bloodlines.
Reed is the son of former Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Jake Reed. He is also the nephew of All-Pro cornerback Dale Carter, who spent two years in Denver.
Though Carter was the Defensive Rookie of the Year in 1992, he was among the worst free-agent signings in Broncos history.
Jake Reed ranks fourth on the all-time receiving yardage list for the Vikings.
J.R. Reed’s normal position is at safety, where the Broncos could certainly use some more depth. But Evero could definitely decide to get creative with him in sub-packages where there are more than four defensive backs on the field.
Reed began his college career at Tulsa before transferring to Georgia after his freshman season. He was a key defensive player for the Bulldogs from 2017-19, totaling over 100 tackles to go with three sacks and five interceptions in his three seasons at the school.
Still just 26 years old, Reed will be a player to keep tabs on with the team once training camp gets kicked off this summer.
