Broncos add another quarterback to the roster
The Denver Broncos have been somewhat quiet since the start of free agency and are now opting for some smaller moves to fill out the roster.
On Friday, the team added another quarterback to potentially back up Russell Wilson in 2022 with the signing of veteran Josh Johnson. Johnson will join Brett Rypien as the quarterbacks behind Wilson.
The Broncos are likely still going to add some more bigger names in free agency, but the team was in need of another passer. We speculated about who should be the backup quarterback in 2022, but the Broncos are going with Rypien and the well-traveled Johnson over a more familiar name, at least for the time being.
The Broncos will be team No. 14 for Josh Johnson
Originally a fifth-round pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2008, Johnson has played for 13 NFL teams and has had two stints each with the San Francisco 49ers, Cincinnati Bengals, New York Jets and Baltimore Ravens.
Since behind drafted, he has only played in three other professional leagues. His resume as a quarterback might read longer than anyone to ever play the position.
But it’s telling that he keeps finding jobs and now he has a chance to be the No. 2 guy in Denver.
Johnson, 35, actually had to start a game for the Jets last season. He has played in 37 career games and has made nine starts. He has passed for 2,270 yards with 13 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. He has also posted a career QBR of 70.7.
The troubling stat is in those nine starts, his teams have a 1-8 record.
The Broncos are obviously all-in on Wilson and brought Johnson in to have a little bit more experience on the bench. The Broncos could certainly still add another quarterback or even wait until the draft to select one there.
