Here is why a Von Miller return to Broncos likely never came close
The Denver Broncos will always be home to Von Miller, but his playing career is going to continue elsewhere.
There had been much talk of a reunion between the Broncos and the best defensive player in franchise history after he helped the Los Angeles Rams win the Super Bowl. Heading into free agency, Von Miller even teased the idea of a return himself.
But there would be other teams in the mix. The Rams were said to want Von back for a potential repeat. The Dallas Cowboys made a lot of sense, especially after the Broncos stole Randy Gregory away from them. Miller is also from Texas originally and it would have been a perfect way for Jerry Jones to get back at the Broncos.
Von Miller heads to Buffalo Bills with a massive new deal
Then, out of nowhere, came the Buffalo Bills. The Bills signed Miller to an incredibly massive six-year, $120 million deal. Of that, $51 million is completely guaranteed.
So if you are upset that the Broncos did not re-sign Miller, that is why. That is just a bit high for a 33-year old player who quite frankly, hadn’t played well for the Broncos for quite some time.
With the deal, Miller becomes the first defensive player in NFL history to sign two different $100 million contracts.
It is quite likely that George Paton saw the market for Miller starting to balloon and backed off, opting for the cheaper Gregory.
This move will make the Bills a dangerous defensive unit, perhaps the toughest in the league and it is likely that they are now being named the favorites to win Super Bowl LVII. But there are so many things that can happen between then and now.
A reunion between Miller and the Broncos would have been a great story. It would have been appropriate given the fact that Von never really wanted to leave in the first place. But for a payday like that, you can’t blame him for taking the money.
And you can’t blame the Broncos for backing off of that absurd number.
The Bills are clearly all-in for 2022, just as the Rams were last season. But for that kind of money, they can have him.
