Broncos should propose this trade to Jacksonville
The Denver Broncos seem to have done most of their heavy lifting thus far in free agency and could now go searching for some outside-the-box kind of moves.
The Broncos were fairly quiet in free agency after their blockbuster deal to acquire Russell Wilson, but George Paton did get deals done with two new huge members of the defense in D.J. Jones and Randy Gregory.
The team also made some other moves that flew under the radar a bit including the re-signing of linebacker Josey Jewell as well as the team bringing in another blocking tight end in Eric Tomlinson.
Jacksonville Jaguars could have a wide receiver ready to be had by Broncos
Now that all the other teams around the league have begun to re-shape their rosters, some other players could be in the sights of the Broncos. One of those currently sits on the roster of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
That would be Laviska Shenault.
The Jacksonville Jaguars have been throwing around money like they have a tree that grows it at team headquarters since free agency got underway.
The Jaguars have agreed to terms on massive deals with several players, but particularly at the wide receiver position where they gave Christian Kirk a four-year, $72 million deal as well as Zay Jones, who agreed to terms on a three-year, $24 million deal.
That is ridiculous but many Jaguars contracts often are.
Regardless of the money being spent, the Jags also already have Marvin Jones on the roster as well. Could these signings mean that former second-round pick Shenault has fallen out of favor?
Shenault certainly struggled to create chemistry with rookie quarterback Trevor Lawrence last year. He caught 63 passes for 619 yards but he did not score a single touchdown. On top of that, he was targeted 100 times in the passing game, meaning he caught just 63 percent of the passes that came his way.
He also dropped 10 passes, a trait that he clearly needs to clean up.
Perhaps he just needs some new surroundings. The Jaguars could be looking to move him and if so, the Broncos should be looking to see what they want in return.
Shenault can be a multi-faceted offensive weapon for a creative play-caller. He is a tough wide receiver out of the middle and is one of the best wide receivers in the league at breaking tackles. That helps in the running game as well, where the Broncos could also decide to use him.
Though no one in the league may be as productive as a wide receiver/running back as the San Francisco 49ers’ Deebo Samuel, Shenault could be used in that kind of way.
The Broncos have a steady wide receiving corps in Courtland Sutton, Jerry Jeudy, Tim Patrick and K.J. Hamler, though one could easily argue the Broncos should have drafted Shenault instead of Hamler in the second round in 2020. I know I did.
The move would also bring Shenault back to the state he played his college ball in. Shenault played at Colorado and he ranks at No. 7 on the school’s all-time receiving list. All six players ahead of him played four years at the school while he only played three.
Shenault is an explosive player who could just be toiling away on a bad Jacksonville squad that may have already decided to move on from him in one way or another. Because of that, he could be had for as little as one day three pick in the draft.
George Paton should be on the phone with Jacksonville general manager Trent Baalke to see what he might be looking for.
