Now that the Denver Broncos have their QB1 in place, who should the team consider for its backup quarterback in 2022 and beyond?

After 6 long years of pain, the Denver Broncos finally have a franchise quarterback, but the quarterback content is not done yet!

One of the most important positions in all of sports is the backup quarterback position.  These players don’t just walk around with an earpiece and clipboard, but rather could be the glue that holds a reeling club together and is often the person who the starting quarterback talks to during the week and during the game the most.

Many teams invest little resources in their backup quarterback spot, and I would think that most fans could not name certain quarterback’s backup men.

It’s a position that needs to be prioritized more than it is, and now that the Denver Broncos have a franchise signal caller, that gives them an even bigger reason to invest significant resources (significant in the backup sense) into a backup quarterback.

Russell Wilson, in his 10th year in the NFL, missed games for the first time in his career.  He said on record that he spends $1 million per year on his body, so it’s unlikely he’ll miss any games for Denver.

However, in the event that he does, the team needs to ensure they have a quality option behind him.

What if Russell Wilson misses a few games when the Denver Broncos are 10-3 and are trying to secure the #1 seed in the AFC?  You never know the circumstances, so below is a short list of ideal backup quarterbacks for the Denver Broncos in 2022.

Andy Dalton

Andy Dalton is a 3 time Pro Bowl quarterback who was drafted 35th overall in 2011.

During his career with the Bengals, Dalton went 70-61-2, threw for 204 touchdowns and 118 interceptions.

Dalton also has a winning record for his career as well, which also features stops with the Bears and Cowboys.

Andy Dalton has dropped off a bit in recent years and is now firmly in the “quality backup/fringe starter” category.  I do not think it’s likely that he lands a starting job for 2022, so if he wants to continue playing, he may have to settle for collecting $7 per year as a backup.

Honestly, Dalton may not play for much longer, so perhaps he would want to chase a ring.

Now that Denver has an elite quarterback, they make a lot of sense as a landing spot for Dalton.  In my opinion, as it pertains to backups, you really cannot get better than someone like Dalton.  He isn’t going to win you games, but he does have a significant record of winning overall and has been to the playoffs multiple times.

Denver needs to invest resources into this position and I think the Red Rifle is a great fit.
