The Denver Broncos are going to be able to spend some money in free agency, but who are 4 defensive free agents the team should prioritize?

When the 2022 NFL free agency period begins, teams will spring to action in signing free agents to better their team.  The Denver Broncos are one of few teams in the NFL who have the cap space available to be active players in free agency.

Just because the team has a bit of money to spend, does not mean they should open up their checkbooks and pay players big-time money.

Denver is in a unique situation where they can solely focus on retaining some of their in-house free agents and still maintain a strong roster.

However, not only are there important in-house free agents to sign, there are some other free agents that the Denver Broncos must prioritize to get their roster as strong as possible and fill their few holes.

Who are 4 defensive free agents the Denver Broncos should prioritize when the free agency period opens in a couple of weeks?

1. The linebackers

The Denver Broncos linebacking situation in 2021 is well-documented, and while the unit performed well overall, they are poised to have all of Kenny Young, Josey Jewell, Alexander Johnson, and Jonas Griffith as free agents.

Denver is going to need to get on re-signing one or multiple of these players, even with a strong free agent linebacker class and talented linebacker prospects, re-signing someone like Josey Jewell, who has been on the upward trend in the NFL, would be a very smart move.

Apparently, the Broncos are talking to Jewell’s agency, so it’s likely he returns on a 1-year prove-it deal after his injury.

I also am a strong advocate for re-signing Alexander Johnson, who boasts pass rush capabilities and an insanely high motor.

Kenny Young is perhaps a mix of both players and is still young and inexpensive, so Denver should re-sign him as well.

The point is, re-signing some of this group is of the utmost importance.
