The Denver Broncos have plenty of cap space to improve the roster in the 2022 free agent signing period. Which players should be targeted on offense?

The Denver Broncos have nearly $40 million in available cap space heading into the 2022 NFL Free Agency frenzy. Of course, the quarterback position is in focus and as of right now, everyone is still holding out hope that a superstar QB could make his way to the Mile High City.

As cool as it would be for the Denver Broncos to be able to bring in another star player like Aaron Rodgers or Russell Wilson, the reality is that we may not see that come to pass.

If the Broncos can’t land a top-tier quarterback via trade, free agency will be crucial. What players on offense should they pursue if players like Rodgers or Wilson are not on the table? Let’s take a look at offensive free agents they might need to prioritize.

Denver Broncos offensive FA no. 1: Mitchell Trubisky, QB

The quarterback position is going to be in focus for the Denver Broncos until it isn’t. The question is — if the Broncos don’t get Aaron Rodgers or Russell Wilson, what does a pivot actually look like?

Drew Lock is the only quarterback under contract for the Broncos right now, so the team would have to go out and get somebody some other way.

I think there’s merit to the Jimmy Garoppolo idea in the short-term, but how would you prioritize the free agent quarterbacks for Denver right now?

It seems like one free agent that is gaining the most steam is Mitchell Trubisky, the second overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft who spent last season as Josh Allen’s backup in Buffalo.

The Broncos could have had Trubisky last year but the timing wasn’t right and they didn’t offer him a contract. It seems, in hindsight, that the team had its sights set on Teddy Bridgewater all along.

In 2022, Trubisky’s value has been rehabbed a bit and NFL teams might prefer the idea of Trubisky on a 1-2 year deal versus a first-or-second-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Trubisky is a plus athlete at the position with a good amount of starting experience. The Bears were not exactly Super Bowl contenders with Trubisky under center but they won 25 of his 38 starts from 2018-2020.

Would Denver Broncos fans be upset about this acquisition? Probably. Broncos fans are not overly interested in reclamation projects at this point, but the reality is, an MVP candidate might not become available.

Just like Ryan Tannehill was once worth a shot for the Tennessee Titans, a player like Mitchell Trubisky might be worth a shot for the Denver Broncos.
