Broncos’ biggest free-agent losses: Shaquil Barrett

It’s hard to knock the Broncos for this one, but with hindsight being 20-20, it looks horrible to have let Shaq Barrett get away.

Following the 2018 season, Barrett, an undrafted player, was looking for an opportunity to be a starter. With Von Miller and Bradley Chubb ahead of him, that wasn’t going to happen in Denver.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers decided to give him a shot on a one-year deal and Barrett went OFF that year, leading the league with 19.5 sacks. The Broncos, meanwhile, have dealt with numerous injuries to Chubb and also decided to trade Miller away this past season.

Malik Reed has filled in admirably, but he’s not on Barrett’s level.

Even with limited snaps, Barrett proved himself to be a solid pass-rusher with the Broncos, picking up 14 sacks in four seasons with the team. He got his big break in Tampa Bay and he hasn’t looked back.

Going into the 2021 draft, guess what happens to be one of the Broncos’ most pressing needs? That’s right, Edge rushers.
