Broncos’ biggest free-agent losses: Chris Harris

Many anticipated this move coming but it still hurt when it did.

The Broncos decided to trade for A.J. Bouye, clearing the way for Harris’ departure. That was official not long after when Harris signed with the Chargers for $20 million over two years.

After going undrafted out of Kansas, Harris spent nine great seasons in Denver, becoming a key cog in the famed ‘No Fly Zone’ secondary. He was a shutdown corner for the team and easily one of the best overall cornerbacks in football.

He is also among the best cornerbacks the Broncos ever had.

That was evidenced by the fact that he was selected to four Pro Bowls. The Broncos thought they might be able to equal his production with Bouye, a good player in his own right at the time, but that did not work out.

Bouye only lasted one season in Denver and the Broncos have been scrambling at the cornerback position ever since. The team had to use big money in free agency to sign Ronald Darby and Kyle Fuller last offseason before using its first-round pick on Patrick Surtain.

Harris may have also taken things a bit personally, signing with the Chargers so he could see the Broncos twice each season.
