5 most significant free-agent losses for Broncos since Super Bowl 50
Broncos’ biggest free-agent losses: Danny Trevathan
For four years in Denver, Danny Trevathan slowly built himself into one of the league’s best young linebackers. He was ready to become a breakout player after helping the team win Super Bowl 50. But then came bigger money.
Following that season, Trevathan took a contract from the Chicago Bears worth $28 million over four years. That also reunited him with former Broncos coach John Fox, who at this point was the head coach of the Bears.
Trevathan was a bit of a do-it-all linebacker in Denver. Though he missed most of the 2014 season, he still managed to post big numbers for the Broncos, registering 282 tackles, three sacks and five interceptions during his time there.
Perhaps the most important thing the Broncos lost when Trevathan moved on was his ability to drop into coverage as a linebacker and be effective in doing so and Broncos fans know all too well how hard it has been for the team to be able to find a player who could do that.
The Broncos had one of the best defenses in recent memory in 2015 and that unit was the main reason they won it all that year. The defense was never the same following the departure of Trevathan.
