3 surprise players the Denver Broncos could trade in 2022
Denver Broncos surprise trade candidate no. 2: Albert Okwuegbunam, TE
This one hurts me.
I loved the idea of Albert Okwuegbunam coming to the Denver Broncos in the 2020 NFL Draft, and I still love the idea of him thriving in this offense. I think he will be a much better fit for the offensive scheme coming in than the one leaving and I fully expect him to thrive…
…if he’s still around.
I don’t say this in a way to make it seem like I’m trying to guarantee some kind of trade for Albert Okwuegbunam, but let’s face it — he hasn’t lived up to expectations in his first two seasons.
Splash plays? They have been there.
Mind-numbing drops on seemingly easy plays? They have also been there.
The frustrating moments with Okwuegbunam have been too frequent, but his combination of size and athletic traits would undoubtedly draw a lot of attention on the trade market.
The reason I bring this possibility up is the depth of the free agent class. Not only is the 2022 NFL Free Agency class deep at tight end, but one guy in particular has significant connections to the Broncos’ new coaching staff.
Robert Tonyan was developed by the Packers out of Indiana State and brings the same type of athleticism as Okwuegbunam but he has way more production. He’s had 13 touchdowns in his last 24 games, although he’s going to be 28 this year and Albert O. is only going to be 24.
Even if you aren’t sold on Tonyan, the free agent crop is ridiculous with players like Rob Gronkowski, Zach Ertz, Dalton Schultz, David Njoku, Evan Engram, Gerald Everett, CJ Uzomah, Mike Gesicki, and OJ Howard also all available.
You can’t help but wonder if the Broncos will try and upgrade over Albert Okwuegbunam this offseason with a more proven player.
