Super Bowl: 5 key plays that led to Broncos’ first championship
John Mobley knocks down Brett Favre’s last gasp
Broncos fans were starting to feel the emotions, but they still had to sit on the edge of their seats. Favre had the ball and he had some time.
On the first play of Green Bay’s final drive, Favre tossed a little screen pass to Dorsey Levens who picked up 22 yards on the play, crossing midfield. Nervous tension began to set in.
After a 13-yard completion to Levens moments later, the Packers had the ball at the Denver 35-yard line. The Broncos had been through some huge Super Bowl disappointments, but if Favre could pull this off, it would rip the heart out of Broncos Country.
After an incompletion, the Packers faced a 3rd-and-6 from the Denver 31-yard line. Favre threw the ball toward Robert Brooks and Atwater came in looking to make the hit but crashed into his own guy, Randy Hilliard. Atwater took the worst of it and was momentarily unconscious.
But the teams had to regroup for one more play. It was 4th-and-6. The Broncos could taste victory, but Favre just needed a couple more plays to have a shot.
He dropped back to pass and was looking for one of his favorite targets, tight end Mark Chmura. Denver had an all-out blitz called and they forced Favre to get rid of the ball. Linebacker John Mobley was in a perfect spot in coverage and knocked the ball down.
The celebration was on and after one kneel-down from Elway, the Broncos finally had their first Super Bowl victory!
