The Denver Broncos have plenty cap space to rework their roster. Who could become early candidates to be released before the 2022 season?

Every year, teams release players before the new season begins.  It’s an unfortunate time for many players, as they are forced to uproot their lives and hopefully sign with another team.  For the Denver Broncos, there may be a few players that are at risk of being cut before the 2022 season.

While the team does not need to make any cuts to fix their healthy cap situation, they will surely release players who aren’t performing up to their contracts.

A few significant contributors in 2021 may be at risk of being released before the 2022 season.

Denver Broncos cut candidates – Mike Purcell

Purcell jumped onto the scene for the Denver Broncos in 2019, quickly becoming a staple of the defense.  He soon signed a 3-year extension but has fallen off quite noticeably in 2020 and 2021.

Mike Purcell only appeared in six games in 2020 and missed four games in 2021.

This, coupled with his decline in play, makes him an ideal release candidate.

The Denver Broncos need to get more youth along the defensive line.  Shelby Harris is still playing at a high level, but he’ll be 31 before the 2022 season begins.

Dre’Mont Jones is clearly a staple of the defensive line, but there really is no one else the team can rely on for the long-term.

Purcell showed flashes of being really solid for Denver, but I think it’s time to move on.

The Broncos would only incur $774,000 in dead money if they released Purcell.  They would save $3.5 million against the cap.
