Broncos could gamble on OT Trevor Penning

It sounds crazy to use a top 10 pick on a player from Northern Iowa, but when you watch Trevor Penning play, particularly how he looked against better competition at the Senior Bowl, it becomes less crazy.

Penning was mauling dudes in these practices, trying to shed the whole small-school label. But when you watch him, there’s not much that he doesn’t do well.

He has quick feet. He has good hand usage. He’s strong as an ox. He would pair quite well as a bookend tackle with Garett Bolles.

Personally, I think the Broncos could trade down, gain some additional draft capital and still grab Penning later in the first round, but of he is their guy, taking him with the No. 9 pick isn’t the worst idea.

Evan Neal is a great prospect and Charles Cross will get some buzz as well, but Penning is right there with them. He has firmly inserted himself as a first-round pick at this point and though he would be seen as a gamble due to his days at Northern Iowa and not a top-flight program, it’s a gamble that could pay off quite well.
