4 players Broncos could gamble on with No. 9 overall pick
The Denver Broncos will have an assortment of options before them in the 2022 NFL Draft.
The draft is always filled with fun and surprises, great picks and picks that bust. That is the risk of the NFL draft. Even when it seems like a prospect is a can’t-miss player, things don’t pan out. And other times, a player will come out of nowhere to become a huge part of the team.
Every team in the league has had players on both sides of that fence, and the Denver Broncos are no exception.
Heading into this year’s draft, there are several players that the team should be considering with the No. 9 overall choice, including a few that just took part in the annual Senior Bowl.
With the No. 9 choice (which is the same pick the team had in the first round last year), the Broncos will have the option of taking the best player on their board or going the safe route and filling the biggest need they have.
But what would that be? The team is in need of help at several key positions, including quarterback, Edge rusher, tackle and perhaps inside linebacker, depending on what happens in free agency.
If George Paton were to put some big chips on the table with his first-round pick this year, here are some players he could gamble on.
Broncos could game on QB Matt Corral
The general consensus going into this draft seems to be that taking a quarterback in the first round–at all–may not be worth the risk.
Most of the quarterbacks will have second-round grades from many analysts but let’s be honest, there will be some chosen in the first round. Teams desperate for quarterbacks always do it, which is why Jake Locker, Blaine Gabbert and Christian Ponder were all taken within the first 11 picks of a draft.
This class could be similar to that one, but like those three teams did, chances will be taken.
The Broncos could take a chance on Mississippi’s Matt Corral, who is almost certainly going to be a first-round pick whether he ends up being worthy of that or not.
Corral posted huge numbers over the past two seasons, including throwing for 49 touchdowns and 6,680 yards through the air while completing a high percentage of his throws.
He worked under Lane Kiffin, who has experience coaching in the NFL and he will come into the league after achieving success at Ole Miss with 15 wins and back-to-back Bowl appearances over the last two seasons.
Corral may not be a day one starter but if the Broncos were to take him and bring him along slowly behind a solid veteran, he could blossom into the long-term option the team has been searching for.
