Denver Broncos slot corner FA option #1: Mike Hughes, Chiefs

One of the youngest free agent options on the market regardless of position, Mike Hughes is a former first-round pick out of UCF who played this past season for the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Chiefs actually acquired Hughes from Denver Broncos GM George Paton’s former team, the Minnesota Vikings.

Judging by Hughes’ most recent game (playoffs against Buffalo), his value might not exactly be at an all-time high.

Still, Hughes fits my personal brand of a younger player hitting free agency whose best days could still be ahead.

For all his faults, in the last two “full” seasons that Hughes has played, he’s forced a total of six fumbles, including forcing four fumbles this past season with the Chiefs.

His aggressive style of play can get him into trouble at times, but it also pays some big dividends in the turnover department.

I don’t think the Broncos should necessarily marry themselves to this option, but with a highly regarded defensive backs coach in Christian Parker as well as a DBs guy in Ejiro Evero seemingly set to come in as defensive coordinator, the Broncos could be a favorable situation for Hughes.

Add in the fact that George Paton was part of drafting him in round one, and you might have yourself a free agent fit.
