Free agency begins in the middle of March for the NFL. Who are some older free agents for the Denver Broncos to target?

Every offseason, NFL teams take chances on older free agents.  Most of the time, they get short-term deals.  Typically, as they progress through their 30s, they settle for 1-year pacts.  For the Denver Broncos, they have a few holes in their roster they could fill with older free agents, and can add to other position groups with aging veterans.

Just because a player is on the plus side of 30, does not mean they are “bad” or whatever other negative term can be used.

This is especially true for offensive linemen.  Many of the top linemen in the league are 30+ years old and still playing at a very high level.

For the Denver Broncos, I can argue that the team should sign a plethora of older free agents, especially if they were to acquire a franchise quarterback via trade.

Typically, these players latch onto an advantageous situation–one where they can envision winning a Super Bowl.

If the Broncos were to land Aaron Rodgers, for example, I’d expect George Paton to sign an older free agent or two.

So, who are some free agents over 30 years old that the Denver Broncos should consider signing?

Denver Broncos older free agents to target: Richard Sherman

Richard Sherman, 34 in March, is a future Hall of Famer.  He latched on to the Buccaneers this season after three years in San Francisco, and seven years in Seattle.

The five-time Pro Bowler recently made the Pro Bowl in 2019, and while he’s been injured the past 2 seasons, Sherman provides ideal veteran leadership.

I think Sherman and fellow cornerback Patrick Surtain II have a lot in common in terms of size, intelligence, and ability, so Sherman would fit nicely in Denver.

Plus, he wouldn’t have to start, as the team will most likely trot out Surtain II and Ronald Darby as the two boundary corners for 2022.

Sherman would be best served in a more reserve role, and his extensive regular and postseason experience would be valuable for any team.

Richard Sherman is clearly a 1-year thing, but his knowledge of the game, coupled with his experience and presence should be enough for Denver to consider acquiring his services for one year.
