Denver Broncos 2022 Draft option #1: Carson Strong, Nevada

You will hear me talk about a strong arm with plenty of these top five quarterbacks. Carson Strong is one of the two top quarterbacks with a cannon for an arm. Strong also is a prototypical pocket passer with a very solid base forcing him to stand upright to create a great throwing motion and accuracy. One trait of Strong’s has been seen to be a huge talking point for criticisms of his. In all honesty, it is more of a misconception than anything.

Mobility does not mean you have to be in the Kyler Murray, Lamar Jackson, and Patrick Mahomes scrambler tier. How a player manipulates a pocket when dealing with pressure is one of the biggest pluses of Strong’s game and at times a weakness. Still, Strong does a tremendous job creating throwing lanes for himself by maneuvering away from the pass rush.

With Strong being a strong-armed quarterback he does get a little reliant on his arm a tad too much. However, in an Air Raid offense, Strong showed at the University of Nevada he can be accurate and process his reads quickly enough making decisive decisions. Heading into the NFL Strong must rely on his elite arm a little less in some situations.

That said, in today’s NFL, Strong’s arm fits with the mold of guys like Justin Herbert, Patrick Mahomes, or Josh Allen. If it truly comes together for Strong, then there’s a possibility in the right situation he can go toe-to-toe with high-powered offenses.

A massive question mark falls on his right knee; however, it seems like things are trending in the right direction regarding his health. That said, we all know there will be teams who are going be to scared of that knee and the long-term effects of it. This is where NFL Combine, player interviews, and more importantly medical doctors must provide concise, correct information for teams to conclude their final evaluation of Strong.

If health (knee) becomes a non-factor, then that will clear the way for Strong to be a first-round pick. Yet, it still takes one team to feel comfortable regarding that knee.

Strong has prided himself on being a Peyton Manning and Brett Favre. If there’s something you can tell with Strong is his ability to process with a ridiculously strong arm (pun intended). His future is bright in the right situation. Strong may not be an option at the ninth pick, but I’d be curious if he is on the Denver Broncos’ radar.
