The Denver Broncos have officially made the move that many fans have been anticipating for much of the 2021 season. Head coach Vic Fangio has been fired.

The news came out early Sunday morning, not long after the team had concluded its season with a 13th straight loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. It seemed questionable as to whether the Broncos would make the move or not during the week, and many fans seemed to feel that Vic Fangio would get at least one more chance.

That will not be the case. Fangio ends his three-year run with the Broncos with a record of 19-30 and no playoff appearances. Despite coaching at some level since the late 1970s, Denver is the only head coaching job Fangio has held.

The Broncos played the Chiefs tough in the season finale and had every chance to win the game but a late fumble by Melvin Gordon that led to a return for a touchdown cost them the game. Later, Fangio inexplicably decided to kick a field goal on fourth down with just over four minutes remaining in the game.

The Broncos never saw the ball again and as our Sayre Bedinger describes, that may have been the last straw.

Other coaches on staff likely to follow Fangio

While that certainly didn’t help Fangio’s chances, it’s just as likely that general manager George Paton’s mind was made up regardless of the outcome of the game.

Fangio certainly gave more than one reason to show that he wasn’t a good fit in Denver, highlighted by his complete mishandling of the quarterback position pretty much the entire time he was there.

Two names that have been on the hot seat all season are offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur and special teams coach Tom McMahon.

UPDATE: Shurmur was also let go by the team Sunday morning.
