As if Denver Broncos head coach Vic Fangio’s status wasn’t already in doubt, his postgame comments may have put the nail in the coffin.

The Denver Broncos have suffered enough this past five years. After Saturday’s season finale against the Kansas City Chiefs, the team parted ways with head coach Vic Fangio and offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur.

It’s been a disaster, to say the least, and Fangio’s postgame comments made things quite uncomfortable if I’m being honest.

Asked what makes the other AFC West teams different than the Broncos, Fangio didn’t shy away from saying what most of Broncos Country has said since the beginning of the season: The quarterback position is the biggest difference in the teams.

There’s no question that the Broncos have the biggest question mark at the quarterback position in the AFC West. Everybody thinks that. But as the head coach of a football team, you just cannot come out and say that straight up. That should put a bad taste in players’ mouths.

Fangio decided that it would be a good idea to kick a field goal while down 28-21 with less than five minutes left in the game. That struck a nerve with many people and ultimately, the team lost 28-24.

I’m sorry, but the head coach of a sports team needs to take responsibility and not put the blame on his players. Fangio might not be suited for a head coaching job right now, and maybe he never will be. His status as the Broncos head coach has come to an end and he should find a job fairly quickly as the defensive coordinator of another franchise.

It turns out that John Elway and Co. have had enough of what Fangio and Shurmur brought to the table. It just wasn’t good enough. Adding those comments into the mix makes things worse. I do wish Vic Fangio luck in his next NFL stop, but it was time to move on.
