Underrated Denver Broncos HC candidate no. 3: Kevin O’Connell, OC, Rams

One of the more underrated possible head coach candidates out there right now is Los Angeles Rams offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell.

Yes, everyone knows that Sean McVay calls the plays for the Rams, but in every other way, O’Connell is the team’s offensive coordinator.

What’s he responsible for? Among other things, he does the scripting and offensive installation and he obviously does plenty of hands-on work with the players every day in practice.

In case you need to know how crucial of a role he plays, the Chargers blocked O’Connell from taking a job with the Los Angeles Chargers and Brandon Staley last year. Staley wanted O’Connell to be responsible for the development of Justin Herbert before he ultimately landed on Joe Lombardi.

McVay clearly wanted to make sure as the team was about to make a big splash at the QB position that he did not lose O’Connell, but he wouldn’t be able to prevent him from taking a head coaching gig.

A former third-round pick at the QB position himself, O’Connell has steadily risen up the coaching ranks in the NFL, and even if he’s not the one calling plays right now for the Rams, he plays an integral role in game-planning and installation and is fully capable of calling plays. Not to mention, he could be a great option for the Broncos to bring in a young quarterback if that’s the direction they go.
